Font Pirate

Privacy policy

Font Pirate is a browser extension by Stefan Mihajlovic for discovering, inspecting, and saving typography. No account is required. The extension has no analytics, advertising, or tracking.

What the extension handles

When you open Font Pirate on a website or use its inspection actions, it reads visible text samples and computed typography such as font family, size, weight, line height, and spacing. It also reads the page address so you can identify the source of a captured font. Source addresses exclude query strings and fragments.

Font Pirate stores your favorites, saved pairings, draft, preview text, most recent font capture, and appearance settings in your browser’s local extension storage. A saved pairing may include a captured text sample and its source address. Page inspection and pointer movement used by the font picker are processed locally. The extension does not maintain a background browsing-history log.

Google Fonts

The font catalog is bundled with the extension. Font previews request stylesheets and font files from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com over HTTPS. Google receives the requested font family and weight and the normal network information needed to serve the request, such as your IP address and browser headers. Font Pirate does not include your preview text, captured page text, source addresses, favorites, or saved pairings in these requests.

These font requests are subject to Google’s privacy policy. Opening a Google Fonts link or the product website navigates to an external site with its own privacy practices.

Use and sharing

Information handled by Font Pirate is used only to provide its visible font inspection, preview, pairing, and export features. Captured content and saved typography are not sent to the developer, sold, used for advertising, or used for credit or lending decisions. Only Plus licensing information is sent to the licensing service, as described below.

Font Pirate’s use of information received from browser APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

Font Pirate Plus

Similar-font matching uses a bundled shape index. Image matching processes the image and the text you enter locally, without uploading either. Selected images are held in memory while the workspace is open. Matching is limited to supported Google Fonts and clear Latin letters and digits; results are suggestions, not guaranteed identifications.

Page font replacement happens only on your request and is temporary. Restoring the page or reloading removes the preview. Font files are downloaded from Google; page content is not uploaded.

Purchases are processed by Stripe, which handles your payment details and purchase email. Our Cloudflare-hosted license service receives your license key, a random installation identifier and extension version to activate, validate or deactivate Plus. The server stores keyed hashes of license keys and installation identifiers, the purchase email, Stripe transaction identifiers, license status and activation timestamps. The extension stores the license key and a signed entitlement locally. License data is kept while needed to provide access, support purchases and meet applicable record-keeping requirements. Contact us to request access or deletion; deletion of licensing records can end Plus access.

Your control

You can edit or delete saved pairings and remove favorites in the extension. The current draft and most recent capture remain in local storage until replaced or cleared. Removing the extension clears its local extension storage. CSS and JSON exports are saved only when you request them; exported files remain wherever you saved them until you delete them. Imported JSON is read locally to restore pairings.

Browser permissions

activeTab and scripting allow font inspection and requested font replacement on the page you invoke the extension on. storage saves your workspace locally. sidePanel keeps the workspace beside a page. contextMenus adds the font inspection actions to the browser’s right-click menu.

Host permissions cover Google Fonts downloads and the licensing API. They do not grant continuous access to arbitrary websites.
